This pattern was designed for the TKGA 2017 Design Contest, which called for an item of neckwear. The design inspiration for my Fall Cowlette (cowled capelet) is a velvet Japanese print I saw on the cover of an art magazine. The yellow and gray/brown colors twisting together in the form of unopened poppy plants on a black background were very appealing to me. The overall image reminded me of Autumn with yellow, falling leaves and fading plants. I created my version of the falling, twisting leaves and thought they would work well in a circular design around the silhouette of a capelet. The garment can be worn not only over the shoulders, but also pulled up around the neck as a large cowl.

The body was worked flat in one piece and then joined together. Stitches are picked up and worked in the round for the yoke and collar. If you prefer working the body in the round and not flat, eliminate the 2 selvedge stitches used for seaming and adjust the pattern accordingly for stockinette stitch and garter stitch.
