Fanflower Fling is a small, crescent shaped shawl that begins with a ‘Provisional Cast-On’. Knitted from the top down, increasing short rows form the body which is edged with a five petal, modified version of the Estonian blossom stitch, adding a touch of lace with nupps or beads. The lace is then bound off with choice of either a loose or I-cord bind off. The final stitch of the lace motif then attaches itself to the original provisional cast on row which becomes the neck edge. There are instructions for four sizes; 14, 15, 16 and 17, determined by the number of motifs on the edge of the shawl. Specific gauge is not required for this pattern.
The “Fling” has perfect radiation without a center spine and short row increases do not interrupt the shawl’s stockinette body. Primary lace increases are worked on the knit side with purl return rows. The motif edge may be blocked with soft scallops or points.
Very unusual in its construction, this pattern promises to hold your interest, enhance your knitting skills and provide both intermediate and beginning knitters with an elegantly simple, small shawl suitable for any occasion or gift giving. Once the concept is understood, the project is quite simple and quickly completed.
This pattern has written short row instruction and both written and charted direction of the lace/motif sections.
