Elbow length sleeves; a wide neckline; and cleverly hidden, functional buttons give a vintage feel to the Farrow Rib Cardigan. A simple pattern of yarnovers and decreases has maximum impact when used over a large area.”

Finished Size: 33.25 (35.25, 39.25, 43.25)“ bust circumference, buttoned, including 1/5” front bands.

Yarn: Muench String of Pearls (70% cotton, 20% rayon, 10% polyester; 99 yd 91 m/50 g): #4003 taupe, 10 (11, 12, 13, 15, 16) balls.

Needles: Sizes 7 (4.5 mm) and 5 (3.75 mm). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Tapestry needle; three 1.25” decorative buttons; six 5/8” functional buttons; sewing needle and matching thread.

Notes from Interweave Knits, Winter 2007:

• “The stitch counts of the St.-John’s-wort pattern repeats are not the same from row to row. The stitch counts in the directions are after completing a wrong-side row, count each sl 1, k2, pass slipped st over group as three stitches. Tip: After the very first St.-John’s-wort pattern row, on right-side rows the center stitch of each k3 group should be a yarnover from the previous wrong-side row. when working wrong-side rows, each yarnover should be in the center of a sl 1, k2, pass slipped st over group from the previous right-side row.”* “When binding off in St.-John’s-wort pattern on a wrong side row, do not work the yarnovers called for in the pattern, and count each omitted yarnover as one bound-off stitch.”
• “If as a result of shaping there are not enough stitches to work an entire pattern repeat, work the stitches of the partial repeat in stockinette instead to prevent throwing off the stitch count.”
• “Although women’s garments usually have buttonholes worked on the right-front band, this cardigan does not because the buttons sewn on the right front are purely decorative. The functional buttons are sewn to the wrong side of the right-front band and buttoned toward the inside of the garment through buttonholes worked in the left-front band.”
