Inspired by mid-century modern upholstery fabric, this scarf or cowl project takes cues from colorful, mix and match interior design trends of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Stacked stitches and chevron stripes take a pattern often seen in upholstery fabric and housewares and transforms it into a versatile knitting project with many possibilities for color, pattern, and form. Instructions are provided in written and chart form.

This pattern uses the innovative stacked stitch technique seen in the Fox Paws pattern to create the funky chevrons, but it is a less complex pattern to try out if you are a stacked stitch beginner.

Color: Any way you like it.
This pattern is a lot of fun to color. The cowl sample used 3 colors in a consistent order of 4 row stripes. A full scarf in this 3 color pattern will use up 3 skeins of yarn. The scarf sample (right) used 5 colors in unequal amounts, arranged in a seemingly random pattern. I planned my “random” looking stripes so the scarf would have the same look from beginning to end. In some places, I did not follow the pattern exactly as sketched to make sure the stripe pattern never repeated, but having a general plan helped me keep the ratio of colors consistent throughout the project.

Finished Size: 11˝ x 76˝ (28 x 193 cm) wrap and 11˝ x 64˝ circumference (28 x 162 cm) cowl
Yarn: 3-5 skeins Baah! Savannah; 400 yards (366 meters) per 100 gram skein, 80% merino wool, 10% nylon, 10% cashmere. The colors used for cowl are Tequila Lime, Blue Topaz and Maldives. The colors used in the shawl are California Poppy, Winter Purple, Framboise, Lilac and Amore.
Needles: Size 5 (3.75 mm) 24˝ (60 cm) circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.
Gauge: 5.5 x 5.75˝ (14 x 14.5 cm) = 2 x 1 reps in pattern.
Other Materials: Tapestry needle, pins, blocking wires, blocking surface.
