I’m sure most of us are finding it more and more difficult to get out of bed as the weather gets colder, so I designed this super scarf as a way to bring the bed with you! The Favorite Cable Scarf can be easily dressed up or down, and you can choose to leave the ends plain, add tassels or fringe, or sew the ends together to create an infinity scarf! There aren’t many scarves that would look amazing on everyone, but this is definitely one of the few (especially when it’s worn with a Favorite Cable Beanie)! I wear mine every chance I get; it immediately lived up to its name and became one of my most treasured pieces. I’m sure you’ll feel the same way about yours!

The Favorite Cable Scarf features twisted cables of varying widths, staggered in a unique way that adds visual interest and doesn’t get boring to knit. Worked in a worsted weight yarn, the thick cables are delightfully full and squishy! In addition, this project is so large that it doubles as a blanket while you’re knitting it up. This pattern is very beginner friendly, as I’ve included a tutorial on knitting cables that you might find helpful. You will find instructions for two widths in this pattern: classic and super scarf. The differing stitch counts for the super scarf are written in parentheses.

I made the pattern sample using one of my very favorite yarns, Lion Brand Yarn “Vanna’s Choice” in the color Barley. Fun fact: I bought this yarn several years ago for my very first project when I was teaching myself to knit! There are so many reasons that I love this yarn: it’s very soft, has a lovely drape, is extremely affordable, is readily available, and there are DOZENS of gorgeous colors to choose from! Also, Lion Brand donates a portion of each sale of “Vanna’s Choice” to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and I think we can all agree on how great that is.

MATERIALS

  • Approximately 650 yds of worsted weight (4) yarn for the regular scarf or 850 yds of worsted weight (4) yarn for the super scarf. For the pattern sample, I made the super scarf size with a little under 6 balls of Lion Brand Yarn “Vanna’s Choice” in Barley.

  • US Size 8 (5mm) knitting needles

  • Stitch markers (optional)

  • Cable needle

  • Yarn needle

  • Scissors

MEASUREMENTS

Classic scarf measures approx. 77” x 12” when laid out flat and gently stretched after blocking.

Super scarf measures approx. 77” x 16” when laid out flat and gently stretched after blocking.

Please note that cables do tend to pull together even after blocking, so the actual width of your scarf while it’s being worn will likely be a bit smaller than the flat measurement.

GAUGE

Approx. 9 st x 12 rows = 2” after blocking. Since this project is easily adjustable, it’s not really an issue if your gauge is slightly off. Simply work more / fewer rows to get the length you wish!
