Felted Beret is a fun, quick project, perfect for the first time ‘felter’. A cute and classy alternative too the usual cold weather head wear, this beret is easy to wear and also makes a great gift.

This one-skein-wonder is beginner friendly, and I have included the felting directions and pictures to help with finishing your Beret.

Skills
Cable cast-on, knit, purl, decreasing, working in the round using circular needles and double pointed needles or magic loop.

Materials
Suggested Yarn: 1 (1) 56g/215yd ball Lichen and Lace Rustic Heather Sport, 100% Canadian wool, in colourway Pollen.

I have used a sport weight yarn, with this needle size, to create a floaty and drapey felted fabric. You could also use a DK or light worsted weight yarn to create a firmer fabric. If so, there will be more room to shape and mold your beret after felting. I have used Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, Gallway, Cascade 220, and Patons Classic Wool for felting many patterns with much success. You can also hold two strands of fingering weight yarn together, particularly Knit Picks Palette. Just be sure to use 100% wool; this will NOT work with a super-wash yarn.

Yardage: 185m/200yds sport weight yarn.

Suggested Needles: 6mm/US 10, 40cm/16” circular needles AND 6mm/US 10, 80cm/32” circular needles OR 6mm/US 10 double pointed needles for crown decreases.

Notions: Darning needle, 8 stitch markers, washing machine.

Gauge: 17 sts/10cm or 4”, and 25 rounds/10cm or 4” using 6mm/US 10 needles, in stockinette stitch, in the round, BEFORE felting.

Sizes:
S/M: to fit head circ 18-20”
L/XL: to fit head circ 20-23”

Notes

• Choose a size based on the ‘fits head circumference’ measurements. This Beret is intended to be worn with zero ease at the brim and loose drape throughout the rest of the hat.
• You can easily add/subtract length in the body of the hat by adding more rounds of st st, or working fewer rounds
