‘Field of Stars’ is a drapey, alpaca-rich cowl sprinkled with starbursts. Its orderly array of stars is inspired by Renaissance representations of the night sky in book illustrations and on chapel ceilings. Instead of their glowing blue-and-gold, I’ve used textured stitches to ‘paint’ this cowl with stars.

Skills needed include knitting in the round, knit and purl stitches, slipped stitches, and a few special stitches which are explained in the instructions. A photo tutorial for these special stitches is included in the pattern.

Materials: 180 yards / 165 metres of DK-weight yarn. I used one ball of Outlaw Yarn’s Vanitas DK (90% alpaca, 10% merino, 218yds/200m per 100g ball). Vanitas DK is wonderfully soft, and its small amount of ‘halo’ doesn’t obscure textured stitch patterns. If substituting yarn, choose something with good drape such as a yarn with alpaca, silk, or superwash wool content.

Sizing: 23”/58cm circumference, by 9”/23cm high.
If you like your cowls to be snugger or longer, or taller or shorter, suggestions are included for resizing.

Full charted and written instructions are provided, so you can follow your preferred type.
