Starting from the center of the top, one increase on each side and on both sides of the center stitch every other row create a triangle. Whatever yarn you use will decide the size of the shawl, so any gauge providing a fabric with some drape will work nicely.

My mind was on the antique patterns from a book in the archive of “Volkskunde Museum Wien” my mother transcribed recently: a knitting pattern collection handwritten in latin cursive.

Amongst those patterns is one depicting scallops, called “Die kleine Fächertour”.

Small gradually folded sections of the knitted fabric, called Bise in German, alternated above each other create a structure like ripples on water or sand.

Since these two patterns are repeated, soon you’ll get the hang of it
and can watch your maritime landscape growing from your needles.
Now throw in some little pebbles, here in the form of simple bobbles, and top it off with some sea foam, “Pfaufeder mit Schlägeltour”.

Take a look at the schematics: it is astonishing what impact color has on a design.
