Fitzwilliam's Gift
During the Regency era, the East India Company had been well established in London for over one hundred years, and Indian shawls were a particularly precious import (see page 18). Imagine Fitzwilliam Darcy (one of the few men who could afford such a thing) going up to London to purchase a luxurious shawl as a special gift for Elizabeth Bennet.
