From the pattern description:

This is a one-colour design using texture to simulate floor coverings found in the home. There is a variety of finishes to draw upon - sisal, wood, rush matting and rubber for example - and the challenge was to meld these textures into one unified design. Floor coverings offers an opportunity to any beginner to try a variety of stitch textures, such as cable, basketweave, slip stitch patterns and variations on seed stitch.
