Flora Socks
THIS PATTERN IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE.
These cozy socks are knit in the round from cuff to toe. They feature a decorative Latvian twist edging, with a folksy stranded colorwork motif that is engaging for new and experienced knitters alike. There is just enough colorwork to peek out over the tops of your gardening boots! Short row heel shaping features German short rows. Instructions are written for knitting with a set of five double-pointed needles, but could be easily adapted to the magic loop method.Written in four sizes, this pattern can be adjusted to fit smaller, larger, or in between sizes by modifying the gauge — using different yarn weights, and/or needle sizes.
NEEDLES & NOTIONS
• set of 5 double-pointed needles or size to obtain gauge (a circular needle is optional, for the cast on edge); you may wish to use needles one size larger for the stranded colorwork portion of the sock
• tapestry needle, scissors, blocking tools
GAUGE and SIZE
The sample socks pictured here were knit with fingering/sock weight yarn at a gauge of 30 sts x 38 rows = 4 x 4 inches / 10 x10 cm (in the round, in stockinette stitch). With this gauge, your finished socks will measure approximately 6.5 (8, 9.25, 10.5) inches in circumference. The length of leg and foot are both adjustable.
You can achieve larger, smaller, or in between sizes by simply adjusting needle size or yarn weight. To calculate finished circumference in a new gauge, divide the sock CO number by your stitches per inch. Using this method you could, for example, knit a heavier, extra-cozy pair of socks in sport or DK weight yarn. You can also add or subtract CO stitches, in increments of 10, for even smaller (children’s sizes) or larger (slippers and Christmas stockings) socks. This will require some of your own calculations for the heel and toe construction, following the general formula established in the pattern.
