Ever since I’ve designed the Flutter and Bloom Shawl I wanted to make a smaller accessory using the same lace stitch pattern. It was just too satisfying to knit! So here she comes, the Flutter and Bloom Bandana.

This is another one of my favorite “knit until you’re happy with the size or run out of yarn” kind of pieces, and yes, it can be made with pretty much any yarn weight! It’s perfect for using up single skeins or partial skeins in your stash.
The bandana is worked from the bottom point up so you can make a larger shawl or a smaller kerchief. The picot edges are worked at the same time with the rest of the fabric. The i-cord bind off can be used on its own or in combination with i-cord ties and / or tassels.
Directions are both charted and written out.

Yarn

  • Any yarn from fingering to worsted weight range, at least 1.41oz /40g (so that you are able to tie the bandana once finished)
  • This pattern works well with variegated and textured yarns including sequins; solid colors are a good choice if you’d like to make an accent on texture
  • White sample bandana: Gossy from Knit Picks (65% cupro, 35% fine merino; 142yds / 130m, 1.75oz / 50g), color Bare
  • Pink sample bandana: Glimmer from Juniper Moon Farm (38% cotton, 35% nylon, 27% polyester; 557yds / 510m, 5.29oz / 150g), color Rose Quartz

Needles and Gauge

  • The gauge is not important for this pattern. Swatch and pick the gauge and needles that make the fabric you like
  • Gauge suggestions in Star stitch, assertively blocked:
  • Fingering: 23sts and 30 rows, US 6 / 4mm needles
  • Sport: 21sts and 28 rows, US 7 / 4.5mm needles
  • DK: 19sts and 26 rows, US 8 / 5mm needles
  • Worsted: 17sts and 24 rows, US 9 / 5.5mm needles Use circular needles on a long cable Optional: use DPNs matching your needle size for i-cord ties
