„Like a cat’s, the fox’s thick tail aids its balance, but it has other uses as well. A fox uses its tail as a warm cover in cold weather and as a signal flag to communicate with other foxes“.
A fox will wrap itself in its tail when it curls up to go to sleep, keeping its paws and nose warm. I wanted to create something huge and warm for the coldest days, and I am super happy with the result. The shawl is perfect for getting really cozy and can be worn in a number of different styles. It is the perfect everyday shawl.

Fox Tail shawl is a classic top-down shawl; which is worked flat in one piece and consists of two identical triangles with a single spine stitch running down the center. Lacy nupp blooms grow within diamond motifs. You will be increasing 4 stitches every right side row: one st on the right edge, two stitches in the center and one stitch on the left edge. The shawl begins with a garter tab cast on and is followed by a lace stitch pattern with a big swathe of brioche stitch at the end. The patterns are easily memorized and quick to knit. The garter stitch lace motifs with our Estonian double nupps and the brioche stitch large border make for a gorgeous, eye-catching and unexpected combination.

It’s the perfect shawl for those new to lace knitting, easy to make and cozy to wear. I knit this version in Aran weight yarn and it worked up quickly. You can easily adjust the number of repeats to make a shawl to suit you and your yarn.

Gauge is not crucial for this design, but if your gauge differs from the pattern gauge, the dimensions of your shawl will be different as well. If you knit at a looser gauge, you may need more yarn. You can keep knitting until you reach the desired size, or you run out of yarn, and it can be knit it in any yarn weight (DK, sport or fingering). The size of your shawl will be determined by the number of pattern repeats.

The pattern is fully written and also includes charted instructions (for the lace part), video tutorials and photos and has been thoroughly tested and tech edited.

Yarn: Novita 7 Veljestä
150grams / 5.29 ounces – 300 meters / 328 yards
Wool and 25% Nylon or any Aran weight yarn.

Yarn consumption:
MC yarn: approx. 0.6 skeins (180 meters /196 yards Novita 7 Veljestä, colorway Honey (289), orange
CC yarn: approx. 2.8 skeins (840 meters /915 yards Novita 7 Veljestä, colorway Kallio (048), middle grey
The shawl weights approx. 515 grams / 18 ounces.

Note that if you use different weight yarn or different needle size, the yardage, weight and dimensions of your shawl may differ from mine.

Needles: 4.5mm / US 7 circular needles 100cm / 40“, or size needed to get the correct gauge.
Other tools: 4 removable stitch markers, tapestry needle, blocking tools (mats and pins).

Size: 200cm / 79“ measured along the wingspan; 88cm / 35“ measured down the center spine.
Gauge: 16 sts x 26 rows = 10cm / 4“ square knit flat in lace pattern and blocked.
Needle sizes are recommendations only. Always use the needle size necessary to achieve given gauge (to save your time). (My personal knitting tension is tight)

Techniques used: Brioching back and forth, brioche increases (brkyobrk, br4st inc, brk1, prp1, sl1yo), lace knitting (yo, SSK, K2tog), purl, knit, Stretchy bind off, Estonian double nupp.
