This gorgeous snowflake motif is a traditional Scandinavian design. As soon as I saw it, visions of cowls danced in my head. It’s delightful and comforting, like venturing out into a fresh snow fall dressed in warm woolies, then retiring inside to watch nature’s show from a cozy chair with a cup of coffee, a good book, and knitting close by.

I absolutely love the feeling of knitting with one colour in each hand and watching a picture grow. It’s an even better experience for me when there are snowflakes involved.

In my sample, I used the Long Tail Cast On and the Basic Bind Off for the cowl, but you can use whatever cast on and bind off you prefer.

The colours I used were
Cascade 220 Heathers in Brown and Cascade 220 in Natural.

For the cowl, you’ll need 100 grams (220 yards) -- 1 skein -- for the background colour and 75 grams (about 165 yards) -- just less than 1 skein -- for the foreground colour.

To make the infinity scarf, you’ll need 300 grams (660 yards) -- 3 skeins -- for the background colour and 225 grams (495 yards) -- 2.25 skeins -- for the foreground colour.

Needles: Size 7 US (4 mm) circular needle that’s 24” for the cowl or 60” for the infinity scarf. You can use a cable length that is slightly shorter, but the stitches will squish together a bit more. Not a big deal.

The Fresh Snow cowl and infinity scarf are knit in the round. You may find it helpful to place markers at the beginning of the round and between each chart repeat.

The depth is 14”, which makes a wide, cozy neckwarmer that can fold down or be pulled up to protect your face on a cold day. I find that the cowl size is just the right circumference to keep my neck warm without the feeling of being strangled -- not too loose to keep out drafts, and not too tight, either. It’s a good size to wear under a coat or on top of a sweater.
