Fretboard
Fretboard is a cosy cabled & textured scarf designed to look like the fretboards of stringed instruments. I created the DK-weight ‘four-stringed’ version for a relative who is a talented bass guitar player, and I couldn’t resist knitting one for myself too. Mine has six cabled ‘strings’ like my favourite instrument the viola da gamba, and is in fingering-weight yarn.
This scarf is fully reversible with its ribbed ground, garter-stitch ‘frets’ and simple reversible-cable ‘strings’. A slipped-stitch selvedge and (optional) tubular cast-on and bind-off create nice clean edges.
Fretboard would make an easy introduction to knitting reversible cables.
Materials: Four-stringed bass/ukulele version: 6 balls of WOOLganic Organic Merino 8ply in ‘Charbon’, or 660yds/604m of smooth DK or worsted-weight yarn.
Six-stringed guitar/viola da gamba version: 2 skeins of Malabrigo Sock in ‘Boticelli Red’, or 865yds/790m of smooth fingering-weight yarn.
Sizing: The four-stringed DK-weight version measures 75”/190cm long and 8”/20cm wide. The six-stringed fingering-weight version measures 65”/165cm long and 8.5”/22cm wide. This scarf is easy to customise by knitting more or fewer repeats.
Gauge: For the four-stringed DK-weight version, my stockinette gauge was 19 sts = 4”/10cm. For the six-stringed fingering-weight version, my stockinette gauge was 24 sts = 4”/10cm.
Both charted and written instructions are included.
Pattern is for personal use only.
