The Frost Moon is the last full moon of autumn. In 2017, it will occur on November 24. Also known as the Beaver Moon, it is the time of the year traditionally associated with trapping, and the time when wild animals, such as the beaver, make their final preparations for hibernation. For me, it’s the time of long walks through swishing leaves, and blue mornings crisp with frost. The Frost Moon shawl calls to mind the beauty of leaves sugared by a dusting of ice, a luminous blue halo around the moon, and the brittle, piercing diamonds of a cold, starry night.

The Frost Moon shawl is a crescent-shaped shawl with a slip stitch textured body, a leafy border, and a picot bind-off. The pale blue sample was worked with Sweet Fiber Yarn’s Sweet Merino Lite (colourway: Worn Denim). The rose sample shawl was worked with Dream in Color’s Jilly (colourway: Shy). They are both the small size.

Starbright Stitch (blocked) - 20 sts and 28 rows on 3.5 mm (US 4) needles = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm), aggressively blocked.
New Leaf Stitch (blocked) - 2 complete repeats (16 sts and 24 rows) on 3.5 mm (US 4) needles = 3 x 3 inches (7.6 x 7.6 cm), aggressively blocked.

Yarn Requirements
Small: 425-450 yards/389-411 metres of fingering weight yarn
Medium: 600-625 yards/549-572 metres of fingering weight yarn
Large: 825-850 yards/754/777 metres of fingering weight yarn

Needles

• 3.5 mm (US 4) knitting needles (at least 14”/35 cm long), straight or circular
• 3.75 mm (US 5) knitting needles (at least 14”/35 cm long), straight or circular
