Small children who refuse to wear mittens of any kind – sound familiar? I realised one day my son Gabriel would probably use half mittens if he had any (especially since I prefer those myself before the real cold kicks in). Half mittens are a great step between seasons - no matter the age!

You start by casting on the double amount of stitches and then reduce to half straight away – this gives a very loose edge. The long ribbing makes the mittens fit better, and you have the option of folding up the ribbing (this is why the edge needs to be very stretchy).

They’re so quick to knit and make for a perfect gift for birthdays or Christmas! They use up a very small amount of yarn – some fingering leftovers in two colours. Alternatively you can make both mittens from a single ball of yarn.

Please add your project to Ravelry or use #gabrielshalfmittens on Instagram - I would love to see what you’re making!
