Galactic Hat
This hat is worked completely in garter stitch with columns of slipped stitches running all the way from the brim up until they meet at the crown with a neat decrease at the top of the hat.
These slipped stitches also serve to hide the jog that comes from knitting garter stitch in the round.
My favourite versions of this hat combine a variegated yarn with a more subtle solid coloured yarn for a two-colour version.
Instructions are given in the pattern to modify this beanie or toque-style hat into a more slouchy-fit hat.
This pattern has been test-knit and tech edited.
Yarn:
Worsted weight yarn
My versions use one skein of Julianna’s Fibre Worsted MCN (80% Superwash Merino Wool/10% Cashmere/10% Nylon, 200 yds/182m, 4 oz/115g)
Needles:
4mm (US size 6) 16” (40cm) circulars or 40” (100cm) circular for the magic loop method, and
4.5mm (US size 7) 16” (40cm) circulars and double-pointed needles or 40” (100cm) circular for the magic loop method
Or needles that give you the correct pattern gauge.
Notions:
Darning needle for finishing
Stitch marker to mark beginning of round (optional)
Gauge: 22 stitches = 4”/10cm on smaller needles in garter stitch, and
20 stitches and 34 rounds = 4”/10cm on larger needles in garter stitch
