Gansey Socks
This pattern is inspired by the Gansey tradition of 19th century England and Scotland. The sock is patterned with knits and purls, but features a tiny cable down the back of the leg. The center pattern motif is a “starfish”, flanked by diagonal lines of purls.
The pattern offers three leg lengths: anklet, crew, and mid-calf. The foot length can be knitted to your measurement.
The sock begins with a Technique Box of the Channel Island Cast-on, illustrated with photos of the English method of this cast-on. There is a chart for the patterning. A Theory Box is included to elaborate on the German (aka Square or Dutch) heel. Another Technique Box is included to show step by step how to finish the toe with Kitchener Stitch.
A list of abbreviations is include as well as a book list for further reading. The schematic is shown at the end. These socks are of one color and the leg length chosen will impact the amount of yarn needed. If using Guernsey yarn, the sock will firm and warm. You can substitute a sport-weight sock yarn for a lighter weight sock.
A kit is available on the Knitting Traditions website, and comes in a choice of four colors.
The gauge is 7 stitches/inch. Guernsey or firm sport weight yarn recommended. This pattern is recommended for intermediate knitters.
