This pattern accompanies the Special Topics in Finishing article, “Grafting Garter Stitch.” But while it accompanies that article, the graft is just a very small portion of the shawl. Along with grafting the garter stitch lace edging, you will use a pinhole cast on to begin working the shawl in the round. Two different lace stitch patterns are used, one for the main body of the shawl and another for the border. When the shawl body and border are complete, an applied lace edging is added. The edging is worked in garter stitch, beginning with a provisional cast on and ending with a graft done in garter stitch.

If you would like to practice the variety of techniques included in this pattern without knitting a large shawl, one skein of the recommended yarn would be more than enough for a large lace doily. Cast on as instructed in the pattern, work 2 repeats of the Shawl Body chart (104 stitches, 26 stitches in each section), and then continue with the remainder of the pattern. The completed doily will be approximately 19.5” x 19.5”.
