Yup…He’s no longer confined to the yard! The feared and hated snake is here to warm your neck and proclaim your love of reptile kind to the world. This is a simple and quick pattern to knit, as long as you know how to cable. He is worked from the tail up on a garter stitch (get it?) background. The garter stitch allows the scarf to lie flat, while letting the snake pop, making a three dimensional pattern. The wrong side of the scarf is interesting, too. It kind of reminds me of a snake skeleton.
The second version with the contrasting snake was created to please my mother. She loved the snake scarf pattern, but wanted the snake to be a different color…so I was promptly bribed to create it for her!

Here are some suggestions for customizing this pattern, just in case you HAVE to be different!
• Change the color or weight of the yarn. I would not recommend anything fuzzy, fluffy, furry, bumpy, nubby or hairy. The snake won’t show up!
• The snake can be shortened or lengthened by subtracting or adding rows in the straight sections of the snake.
• The snake can be worked in a contrasting color using an intarsia type method. This option is rather difficult, but the result is very unique.
• Keep in mind that some changes will affect the amount of yarn needed to complete the project. Be sure to take that into account.
