This garter stitch shawl is worked from one side to the other and uses short rows to create a ruffle along the bottom edge. It also features a “collar” in the middle for extra warmth. Inspired in part by the costuming in the BBC dramatization of Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford, the shawl is designed to be like Mrs. Gaskell’s female protagonists in the book -- functional and practical while still having a bit of something pretty.

This shawl is worked at a fairly dense gauge for the weight of yarn in order to create a warm, though stretchy, fabric. A lighter weight of yarn may be substituted, but be aware that doing so may result in a finished shawl that differs in its dimensions from those specified in the pattern.

Please note: Although this pattern uses short rows, no wraps are needed due to the fairly dense gauge used.

In addition to the specified yarn and needles, you will need one stitch marker and a yarn/tapestry needle to complete this shawl.
