The shrug has top back piece but the lower body is knitted from lower center back around the front from a provisional cast on. The cables curve with the body using short rows which are synchronized so that the cable pattern is uninterrupted.

ERRATA in Knit’N Style: The published diagram has the back neck shortrowing shown backwards. The taper should be towards the body with the shorter side towards the neck. The directions apparently are correct though.
