James Glaisher was a famous English meteorologist, aeronaut, and astronomer. In 1862 he took what could have been an ill-fated hot air balloon trip, breaking the world’s record for altitude and inadvertently creating a new branch of science, aeroecology; how animals travel up in the atmosphere. While he survived his trip into the cold, frigid air of 8,800 meters (28,900 feet), I bet he would have been much more comfortable with this hat in his pocket!
