Glay Shawl
This was a stash-diver, springtime cast on. The misty green shade of DK from La Bien Aimee that I chose for this shawl reminds me of cool, ocean air. The main color is called Glacier. That inspired the name: Glay Shawl (a play on the word Glacial).
This two-skein shawl is easy to knit and plays with the effect of different textures on variegated yarns. I combined both meditative Stockinette and squishy Garter Stitch. You’ll find that the same skein of special yarn looks very different in each stitch pattern. You’ll love to knit this while you’re traveling, chatting or taking in a new series. This shawl flies off of your needles in no time.
Yarn
1 Skein La Bien Aimee Merino DK (100% Superwash Merino, 252 yards / 115 grams, 230 meters) for Main Color in Glacier (light gray/green)
1 Skein La Bien Aimee Merino DK (100% Superwash Merino, 252 yards / 115 grams, 230 meters) for Contrast Color in La Grande Nuage (medium gray with blue speckles)
OR DK Weight: 252 yards / 230 meters of MC and 252 yards / 230 meters of CC.
Note: These yarn amounts are estimates. Any changes that knitters make to gauge, substituting yarns or changing the shawl’s measurements will change the amount of yarn needed. I used almost all of both skeins to knit this shawl. You may need to undo your swatch to get all of the yarn you need. Or improvise! Work fewer repeats of the stitch patterns to get the most out of your skeins.
Gauge
16 stitches and 24 rows = 4” / 10 cm in Stockinette Stitch.
Note: This shawl has been worked at a relaxed gauge in order to create an accessory with great drape. It has been blocked aggressively to take full advantage of that drape.
Suggested Needles*
US Size 7 / 4.5 mm or size needed to obtain gauge, circular needle 40 or 60” / 100 0r 150 cm length.
Note: A long, circular needle has been chosen for this pattern to accommodate the large number of sts in the pattern.
