Good Morning
“Good Morning!“ said Bilbo, and he meant it. The sun was shining, and the grass was very green. But Gandalf looked at him from under long bushy eyebrows that stuck out further than the brim of his shady hat.
”What do you mean?“ he said. “Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?”
“All of them at once,” said Bilbo. “And a very fine morning for a pipe of tobacco out of doors, into the bargain.
Well, although I don’t usually endorse pipe tobacco, I do enjoy bringing my knitting outside on nice mornings. I usually bring a shawl and cup of coffee with me, in case of chilly air— so this seemed to be a good match. This shawl has Faroese shoulder shaping to keep it on, and a lovely pattern of cabled sunbeams down the back. Good morning!
Skill-level: Adventurous beginner— the cable pattern is the only real challenge here, and it has plenty of rest rows. The rest of the pattern is lots and lots of stockinette and some yarn-over increases.
Materials: approximately 900 yards (820 m) of fingering weight yarn. For the two-color version, plan on 800 yards (730 m) of a main color and 100 yards (90m) for the center contrast panel. The shawl pictured used 2.5 skeins of Handmaiden Casbah in the color “Midsummer Morning” and a partial (between .25 and .5) skein of La Fee Fil Merino Nylon in the color “Fleur aux petales d’Or”
Needles: US5 (3.75mm) circular needle
Tools: Cable needle, if required, 12 stitch markers, scissors, tapestry needle (for weaving in ends), crochet hook (for cast-on only), waste yarn (for cast-on only)
Gauge: 21.5 stitches and 35 rows in 4inches or 10cm. Note: Gauge is unimportant for this pattern, it will affect yarn supply and size, but not overall fit— work a gauge that provides a fabric you like.
Sizing: One size, adjustable based on yarn supply and preference. Sample shawl measures 22 inches (56cm) down the center back.
