Oh yes, if you really don’t want to knit it flat and like me you can’t sew you can do one of two things;

1. Knit in the round in black, then carefully duplicate or swiss darn the motif onto the hat

2. Knit in the round, and when you need to strand yarn, you can strand it backwards (yeah go all Satanic with Fair Isle) to pick up again on next round, but just keep lots of yarn on bobbins in small areas.

Ah…2 and a half…thought of one more solution
You could also add a round of multiple little Skulls and Holly, so that you can carry yarn all the way round
