Experienced. Six sizes. A non-traditional, over-sized cardigan, knitted back and forth flat. Channel Island Cast-On, split garter welts, seed stitch initials, seam stitches, garter stitch definition ridge, underarm gussets, shoulder straps, very full sleeves, buttonbands knitted as part of the body. The gauge is 7 stitches/ inch.
Featured Techniques: The Channel Island Cast-on, Underarm Gussets, Raised Increases, The Perpendicular Shoulder Join, Contrast Color Cast-on.
Yarn: Guernsey yarn or other smooth sport weight
Note: The original edition of Knitting Ganseys only has instructions for the 44” size. (2450 yards)
Note: Knitting Ganseys: Revised and Updated version has a shaped neckline. Size 0 needles are optional for garter welts.
FOR SIZE 40 1/4” ONLY (pages 182-183): There is a typo in the 1, 2, and 3rd printings of the book in the chart of the 2-stitch repeats. It should read:
Work 3, 3, 4(correct), 4 (correct), 5, 5 times from A to D on the chart. Then from E to A, work 5, 5, 4 (correct), 4 (correct), 3, 3 times.
Buttonhole placement revised: Pg 181 of the new book, first column, last paragraph: Work 30-32-35-38-40-43 rows
between the last buttonhole in one set and the start of the first buttonhole in the next set.
Blue outline in the chart on page 182: The chart should extend one more square to the right so that the entire zig-zag is enclosed. (The blue line will overlap the red line on that side.)
