This is my grandmother’s pattern for the mittens she used to knit for my mom and her siblings. She didn’t need a pattern to knit mittens and only wrote her made up pattern down when my mom asked her for it. I never knew her, but having her pattern makes me feel like we weren’t complete strangers.

This pattern has been updated to use DK weight yarn for thicker mittens that knit up quickly. I’ve also added an optional mitten flap constructed using ingenious slipped stitches and instructions for customizing any size to fit.
