Grandmother's Table Mat
Happy New Year! I’m starting the year with something easy and fun! This “Grandmother’s Table Mat” is from 1892 Butterick Publishing’s The Art of Knitting, p.100, #8. I decreased the size a bit so only 1 skein of sock yarn would be needed. The 2 big advantages of this pattern are how simple it is and how the number of points can be adjusted to make it lie flat. Use a variegated yarn or 2 colors of yarn to have some extra fun!
I use knit mats between my cellphone and hard surfaces to tone down the phone’s noises, prevent scratches and make finding my phone easier.
The sample is about 12 inches in diameter, point to point. Patons Kroy Socks yarn color is “Mexicala Stripes”. It takes about 4.5 hours to make a mat.
Skills needed: cast on, slip purl-wise, knit, SSK and bind off in knit stitch. A provisional cast-on and Kitchener stitch for sewing the seam is optional.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able thread/yarn will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.
130 yards of Patons Kroy Socks yarn will make 1 mat in the stated gauge. One skein will make 1 mat.
