The Grateful Star Mat is a small hexagonal tapestry crochet project, designed as a simple and approachable introduction to colourwork.

Worked in the round using just two colours, this pattern builds gradually and uses only basic stitches, making it a manageable way to try tapestry crochet for the first time. It’s also a quick project - most mats can be completed in around or under two hours.

The finished mat is both practical and decorative, working well as a coaster, plant mat, or small handmade gift.

Finished Size

Approximately 25 cm across between opposite corners of the hexagon.

Yarn

DK weight cotton yarn
Sample shown using:
Yarnsmiths Cotton DK (100% cotton, 50g / 106m per ball)

• Two colours required (MC and CC)
• Small amounts of each colour used
• One ball of each colour is enough to make at least two mats

Other DK cotton yarns can be used. You could also substitute with a lighter (4-ply) or heavier yarn to adjust the finished size.

Hook

3.5 mm crochet hook (or size appropriate for your yarn and tension)
For tapestry crochet, a slightly smaller hook than usual is recommended to help keep stitches neat and minimise colour show-through.

Additional Notes

Cotton yarn is recommended, particularly if you plan to use the mat for hot items, as it will help protect the surface underneath.
Blocking is also recommended to help the hexagon shape sit neatly and to sharpen the corners.
