My inspiration for this hat occurred after a recent visit to my parents’ home in New Mexico. While there, I often find myself walking in the field behind their home. I have been frequenting this field since I was a child. I recall the excitement of catching insects, picking flowers, and collecting creek water. In the summer, the field is filled with flowers of vibrant pink, yellow, light purple, and white. Experiencing this memory from the mind of an adult, laced with the emotions of my childhood, was offset with the gratitude that I could now share this field with my own children. It called to mind New Mexico’s state motto, “It grows as it goes.” The motto is often called nonsensical, but to me it reminds me that as my life grows, it is also going and constantly changing. The field has changed, the old swing is now gone, but the field is just as magical in the eyes of my children.
