Hamegaet
This design is inspired by the colours and textures of Hazel’s home village, and its name combines two Shetland dialect words - hame (home) and gaet (path). Hazel’s three-dimensional hap combines texture and colour with an innovative construction, in which the body is picked up and worked down from Fair Isle shoulder pieces. Short row shaping through the waffle stitch pattern creates an elegant, wearable shape.

1 set 3.25mm (UK 10 / US 3) circular needles, 150cm / 60in long
Crochet hook of similar size for provisional cast on
A spare thin needle for picking up stitches
Stitch markers
Waste yarn (a smooth cotton yarn of similar weight to the main yarn would be ideal)
1 button, approximately 3cm / 1¼in diameter
Rust-proof pins and / or wires for blocking
Strong cotton for blocking
Stitch holders or spare circular needles

Gauge
28 sts and 34 rows to 10cm / 4in over Fair Isle patterning, using smallest needles, after washing and blocking
17 sts and 40 rows to 10cm / 4in over textured pattern, using largest needles, after washing and blocking
The textured stitch pattern is tricky to measure and very stretchy. You may wish to swatch in the lightest shade to facilitate measuring.
