Hangashore
Degree of Difficulty: TANGLY
In days gone by a man who was regarded as too lazy to fish was known as a hangashore. The term eventually came to embrace a wide range of rascals, including mischievous children. The Dictionary of Newfoundland English records that a hangashore was “too bad to be called a good-for-nothin’ but not bad enough to be called a sleeveen.” The bold graphic appearance of this mitten makes us think of certain lighthouses scattered around our shores.
