Hannafore's Cushion
This cushion uses the same cable pattern as the Hannafore Jacket from my Simple Knits book.
It features one of my favourite cable stitches — a simple honeycomb cable that adds lovely texture and depth. Maybe it’s my favourite because it’s named after honeycomb, which always makes me think of bees and their gentle hard work! In traditional fisherman folklore, this stitch was said to bring luck and a plentiful catch.
The pattern is worked over an 8-row repeat, but only two of those rows include the cable crosses — the rest are soothing knit and purl rows, giving you plenty of time to relax in between.
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat from the bottom up in one piece, folded and then the side seams are joined together.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, two simple cable techniques, buttonholes, cast off. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.
YARN
Six 50g balls of Donegal Aran Tweed.
100% Pure new wool, 80m/88yds per 50g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm.
Cable needle (optional).
NOTIONS
Two medium buttons.
Three large buttons.
Cushion pad to fit. (I used a 40cm/16ins x 40cm/16ins cushion pad.)
GAUGE (tension)
24 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm square over honeycomb cable pattern. I obtained this gauge with 4.5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE AND FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
40cm/16ins x approximately 84cm/33ins.
