Happy's Original Feliz Navidad Scarf
A little over 2 years ago I, through a friend and former coworker, was contacted to make some scarves for a TV Pilot for a show called Happy! The pilot scarves were chaotic stripes with a pop of traditional pattern at the ends. The first of 2 were knit in a day. Let me tell you, that TV schedule is rough.
The show was picked up and some more elaborate scarves were needed, this time with a more forgiving turnaround. Many chart patterns were shared back and forth, a few yarn meetings were had at LYS’s around the city, and samples made. The final scarf was designed to meet very specific requirements: traditional patterns, reindeer, snowflakes, and the most specific being — Feliz Navidad. The yarn that was ultimately chosen because it was soft near the face, and most importantly, it was readily available in the exact same colors at a moments notice should the show require another scarf.
This scarf was designed to achieve a very specific look and not for pattern publishing, so there are a few things that make it a less than ideal pattern to make. There are extremely long floats and you will need to know how to weave them in as you go and maintain an even tension. The two ends are knit from the bottom up and grafted together at the back of the neck so the stitches went in the same direction when the motifs were seen on screen. The two sides are a mirror image of each other for the majority of the scarf so it would be easier to maintain continuity on screen.
The yarn requirements are estimates. I was knitting for the show and not for pattern publishing so I did not keep close track of that. I recommend either purchasing yarn you can easily get more of, or buying from a place with a good return policy. I will update this if anyone is so kind as to share their yardages if they make it.
I am providing this for free for several reasons, it is a beast of a pattern and not one I would have designed for publishing. I try to make my normal patterns much easier. It is also not 100% my design, it was made to meet very specific design ideas. I am also not a Spanish speaker, Feliz Navidad are not my words. If you enjoy the pattern, please check out my other designs, I would love the support!
Etsy shop owners, I have been contacted by a lot of people wanting one of their very own. If you so desire, please make them and sell them! I encourage cottage industry! However, mass production is prohibited. Please include design credit in your listings.
Alternative charts will be added to the pattern over time. A lot of the initial charts were a lot easier and would still make cute holiday scarves.
If you have any questions I will happily try to answer them, please use the email on my profile page.
