Hawai'i Volcanoes
This month’s design is inspired by Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. The island of Hawai’i, also known as the “Big Island” holds a very special place in my heart as does Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. I was lucky to be given the “locals” experience on my first trip to the island, and every visit after that I’ve fallen more and more in love.
The landscape of this park is like no other. You can watch the glow of the volcano at night, walk through a huge lava tube, or hike across the Kilauea Iki crater. One of my favorite memories is being serenaded by a park ranger on his Ukulele at the view point one evening while watching the lava glow with my hubby. This place is nothing short of magical. So of course I HAD to create an equally unique hat which is why this design can be worn four (yes FOUR!) different ways - hat, cowl, kerchief, or headband!
Knit in Kristen in Stitches In Stitches DK in Kilauea or Malabrigo Arroyo in the muted rainbow “Pocion” color which I think perfectly embodies the deep and moody shades of the island with pops of lava red. This design a variation on an eyelet lace pattern with no crown shaping. Instead you’ll create an i-cord tie to cinch it closed. This also allows you to insert the ties vertically to create a kerchief instead, or wear it open and folded in half as a ear warmer headband or around your neck as a cowl. The lightweight fabric is perfect for cool nights on the island or anywhere you wear it.

S - to fit up to a 20” head circumference.
