Head Socks
Sock yarn is not just for feet! These nifty vertical wedged stripes are achieved by knitting the hat sideways with short-rowing using self patterning sock yarn.
YARN, GAUGE, SIZE AND MACHINE
Deborah Norville Serenity sock yarn was used for the sample. Most sock yarns can probably get the gauge but this one is exceptionally soft and comfortable being 50% wool, 25% bamboo and 25% nylon. The sample is the smallest size and took a little over 1 skein. 3 skeins should produce 2 hats of any size. A Passap or Japanese standard machine can make the hat. No ribber is required. Finished sizes are 20, 21, 22” in circumference and 88.5, 9” from bottom of hem to top of hat with the hat laying relaxed. These sizes fit big kids to XL adults. If you want a slouchier hat, add about 16 stitches to the cast on. This will lengthen the hat by 2” which is typical of the stylish slouchy look. More stitches= more slouch. Passaps: Use N for the band, BX while short-rowing, front bed for the main knitting and black strippers throughout the project.
