Heart Cookie Mitts
I was hungry but had no sweets so I dreamed up these sugary sweet mitts!
Sweet Mitts Decorated with Heart Shaped Cookies, based on motif # 147 in my book 200 Fair Isle Motifs: A Knitter’s Directory
Need a last minute gift? These darling mitts can be made in a jiffy. Constructed with a simple afterthought thumb – no need interrupt your fair isle groove. Use yarn from your stash!
Finished Size 7 3/4” in circumference and 7 “ tall.
Gauge 13 stitches x 13 rounds = 2x2” in colorwork pattern from Chart, using larger needles.
Yarn Stonehenge Fiber Mills Shepard’s Wool, 100% wool, 3oz/250yds; Hot Pink (MC), Tan (CC).
Yarn and Sizing Notes Shepard’s Wool is listed as a worsted weight yarn. I have also used DK weight yarn and even sport weight, which result in slightly different sizing, but still fit an “average sized hand. You can change the size by using larger or smaller needles respectively. If you need them longer add a row or two before and after the colorwork pattern.
Yarn Amounts You will need about 130 yds of MC, and about 45 yds of CC. These amounts are generous, you might use less!
I have squeezed out a pair using one 109 yard skein for the MC. If you run out you can always make the top ribbing and thumb a different color and call it a design feature. The larger amounts called for allow for generous tails and swatching.
Needles Double pointed needles; Ribbing–size US3 (3.25 mm), Color-work section–size US4 (3.5 mm) Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions Stitch markers; tapestry needle, a 12” piece of smooth waste yarn in a color very different from your MC and CC.
