A sister pattern to the Soft-Hearted Hat and Cowl, Heartwood is named after the innermost part of a tree’s trunk: its strong core. The hat features subtle tree motifs that grow out of the brim upwards to the crown and can be embellished to create a winter or Christmas tree scene.

CONSTRUCTION
Heartwood is a lightweight but cosy accessory, combining single-round stripes in garter stitch with slipped stitches and a small amount of lace. This patterning creates a gorgeously satisfying texture, making it an interesting and intuitive knit.

The pattern contains photos, a schematic, links to video tutorial for embellishment stitches, and has been professionally tech edited.

YARN
Jamieson & Smith, 2ply Jumper Weight (4ply / fingering-weight; 114m / 125 yds per 25g ball; 100% Shetland wool)
Green/Grey/Red sample (size 1) used:
1 ball in each of the following shades - 118 (Green MC), 203 (Light Grey CC1) & 43 (Red CC2)
Plus, small amounts of similar yarn for embellishments, approximately 3m per “tree” (optional)
Turquoise/Pale Turquoise/Orange sample (size 3) used:
1 ball in each of the following shades – FC39 Mix (Turquoise MC), 1280 Mix (Pale Turquoise CC1) & FC7 Mix (Orange CC2)

3.25 mm / US 3 DPNs, 80cm (for magic loop) or 40cm circumference circular needle AND
3.75 mm / US 5 needles either DPNs, 80cm circumference circular needle for magic loop, or 40cm circumference circular needle plus DPNs (for crown)
4 (5, 5) stitch markers, plus 1 distinct marker for BOR
Tapestry needle and pompom maker (optional)
