This pattern is many things rolled into one:

  • It is a guide, how to work the helical knitting technique
  • It’s a pattern for a hat, made using this technique
  • It’s a pattern for a pair of fingerless mittens, made using this technique

I’ve designed this pattern for my helical knitting-class. That is why I have used sock yarn held double for it, but you can use any type of yarn, as long as you get gauge, even single stranded yarns. I do recommend, though, that you use yarn that is durable for the mittens, so they don’t tear too early.

Helical knitting is a great technique to use up your left overs, since you won’t need huge amounts of each colour to create the one row striped pattern, that the spiralled knitting creates.
