Heritage Yoke
Construction
This sweater is worked in one piece from the top down with a circular yoke construction. Short rows are used to raise the back neck and optional short rows can be worked after the colorwork raising the lower half of yoke (images show sweater without lower short rows). Sleeves and body are separated at the underarm, then worked individually down to cuff and hem. Body includes optional A-line waist shaping. Body and sleeve lengths may be adjusted (note that adjustments in length will affect total yardage required of MC).
Pattern Notes
• This is the original version of my Heritage Yoke Sweater from Grand Shetland Adventure Knits. A cardigan version is also available as a separate pattern. This version is worked in a light fingering worsted spun Shetland yarn and therefore has a slightly different gauge than the cardigan version.
• If substituting with a woolen spun fingering weight yarn then know that the overall depth of the yoke is likely going to be deeper.
• If you want to reduce the depth of the yoke due to having a different row gauge:
o One option for reducing the yoke depth would be to omit rnds 5, 11, 19, 33, 40, 46, 55 + 63 of the chart which are single color rnds.
o Try on the yoke once colorwork is complete to see if you feel you need to add the optional short rows in the lower body.
o There are some plain rnds worked before dividing for body and sleeves. These could also be eliminated if you are looking to shorten the yoke depth.
• The lower back optional short rows help to raise the back of the yoke making it sit more comfortably on the body. The measurements listed in the schematic reflect the sweater without these optional short rows.
• The chart can be worked with less colors: Two color options using just one background color and one pattern color, or one background color and multiple pattern colors (see the cardigan version projects here).
