A Dirndl, in Austria, is either a pink stone fruit, another word for girl or a traditional Austrian or Bavarian dress. This shawl is a holey-er version of the Dirndl Sorbet shawl that I designed as an accessory for my mum’s hand-sewn Dirndl dress and in the colors that were chosen for my hometown’s newly created traditional garbs (grays and green with red accents).

This airy shawl is knit top-down and features lots of fun techniques and textures. A crochet-detail adds another pop of color and interest and an i-cord surrounds the shawl for a finished look (thanks to the i-cord tab cast on, i-cord edges and an i-cord bind off).

Finished Measurements: 220 cm / 86.5” wingspan, 65 cm / 25.5” height at center

Yarn: 4 (or more) colors fingering weight yarn

Yardage: 978 m / 1070 yards in total

• Color A: 405 m / 443 yards
• Color B: 280 m / 306 yards
• Color C: 125 m / 137 yards
• Color D: 168 m / 184 yards

Gauge: 22 sts / 30 rows = 10cm / 4” in seed stitch (relaxed after blocking) – although gauge is not critical, it will influence the size of your finished shawl!

Needles: US 6/4 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge)

Ein Dirndl ist, zumindest in Österreich, entweder eine Steinfrucht, ein anderes Wort für Mädchen oder ein traditionelles österreichisches oder bayrisches Kleid. Dieses Dreieckstuch ist eine löchrige (engl.: holey) Version des Dirndl Sorbet Tuchs, dass ich als Accessoire zum handgenähten Dirndl meiner Mutter – passend zur neuen Tracht meines Heimatortes in hell- und dunkelgrau und grün mit roten Akzenten – entworfen habe.

Dieses luftige Dreieckstuch wird von oben nach unten gearbeitet, mithilfe vieler verschiedener Techniken und in unterschiedlichen Texturen, die für viel Abwechslung sorgen. Am Ende werden noch Häkelverzierungen ergänzt. Umgeben wird das ganze Tuch von einem i-cord, das für einen schönen, geraden Abschluss sorgt.
