When I was a kid my parents bought a recording of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, read by Nicol Williams. I can’t count how many times I have listened to that version. These mittens are an homage to the comfort and idyll of the shire. A warm hearth, a well-worn stone path to the welcoming front door, and flowers in the garden.

These mittens are knit with an optional ribbed cuff to fold into the mitten or to wear under the sleeve for extra warmth, followed by Latvian braid cuffs, and a thumb gusset. This pattern includes directions and charts for 3 sizes 7½ (8, 9) inches/19 (20, 22.5) cm circumference. To determine your size, measure around your knuckles and choose the size that gives you a small amount of positive ease.
