Hömin is a Shetland word for twilight. One of the best things I know is what the Swedes call ‘kura skymning’ – calming down at dusk, sitting quietly for a while when darkness falls.

It may be outdoors, perhaps with an evening dip, or indoors with a lighted candle. Hömin is a lace collar that is just the right warmth for relaxing in the twilight. It is knitted in a lace pattern that is found in many variations in the Shetland lace tradition. This one is simple and enjoyable to knit and even nicer to wear.

Method: the collar is knitted in rounds on a circular needle
from the bottom up. It has a garter stitch edging at the bottom
and the neck. Remember that when knitting garter stitch
on a circular needle you must work alternate rounds on knit
and purl.

SIZE: ADULT

bottom edge.

Shade: 2002 Mooskit

Needle: 4mm (UK 8, US 6) circular needle

Tension (gauge): 19 sts × 24 rows in pattern on 4mm (UK 8, US 6) needles = 10 × 10cm (4 × 4in)

Other: markers, darning needle for fastening off ends.

Variation: Do you want the collar to be larger or smaller? Add
a repeat or take some away so it will fit a child. You could also
opt to knit it on a thicker needle and maybe in a slightly thicker
yarn. It is also great to knit in stripes of leftover yarn or why not
your own hand-spun? If you like, you can make it with a higher
back neck like the yokes of the sweaters in this book.
