✨ The Story Behind Your Next Knit

I was in the Air Force for almost seven years following college, and I was fortunate (although I didn’t always feel so at the time, being a newlywed with my husband deployed to Afghanistan) to spend a year in South Korea, the “Land of the Morning Calm.” As I reflect upon my year there, falling in love with South Korea, the food, the opportunities, and the absolutely astonishing cities and nightlife, I can’t help but hope that I can bring my family there someday.

Hongdae is an extremely fun area in Seoul (especially if you’re college age and have a passion for drinks mixed with Soju!). The city lights, neon signs, and energy of this neighborhood inspired this funky shawl. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

🧶 Quick Highlights:

  • Difficulty: Intermediate (knowledge of how to work mosaic colorwork is helpful, but this pattern makes it fun, not frustrating!).
  • Techniques: Garter tab cast-on, standard increases/decreases, picking up stitches, I-cord bind off, and mosaic colorwork (slipped stitches).
  • Construction: Worked from the top edge down, creating a versatile accessory you’ll enjoy wearing and sharing.
  • Special Features: Two-color design, oversized, easy mosaic colorwork, charted instructions (does not contain written instructions for the colorwork charts), versatile shawl shape.
  • Yarn Weight: Fingering weight.

📐 Sizes & Finished Measurements:

  • Size: One size
  • Actual Measurements:
    • Length Along Top Edge: 64” (163 cm)
    • Depth: 34” (86 cm)
  • Tip: Exact gauge is not critical, but a significant difference will affect the final size and yarn requirements. Knit a swatch, friend! 😉

🧶 Yarn Requirements :

  • Recommended Yarn: La Jolla by Baah Yarns; 100 % SW Merino; 400 yds (365 m); 115 g (4.1 oz); Fingering Weight
  • One skein each in:
    • MC: “Moroccan Nights” 2 skeins (approximately 770 yds (704 m); 221 g (7.8 oz) needed)
    • CC: “Mountain Meadow” 1 skein (approximately 395 yds (337 m); 106 g (3.7 oz) needed)
  • Or a similar fingering weight yarn. Choose solid or mostly solid colored yarn that has good stitch definition and select colors that have enough contrast to allow the colorwork to stand out.

🥢 Needles:

  • US 6 (4.0 mm) and US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles, or size to obtain gauge at least 40” (102 cm) long.

✂️ Notions:

  • Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
  • Waste yarn (because sometimes you just need to stash those stitches for later!)
  • Stitch markers (25, for keeping track of all that mosaic magic)

📏 Gauge:

  • 21 sts / 34 rows = 4” / 10 cm in Garter Stitch using smaller needles (US 6 (4.0 mm)) after a light blocking
  • Exact gauge is not critical, but because the shawl requires nearly the entire skein of each color, deviation from the gauge will affect the size of the shawl and yarn requirements.
