Hoot mittens
This is a pattern for a lined pair of mittens worked from the bottom up and in the round, using the stranded colourwork technique.
Stitches are provisionally cast on, before working Tvinnarand braid/plait, the wrist, and then mitten chart. Then you will rejoin lining yarn and work lining in stockinette following your mitten and chart (in a needle 1 size smaller than you used for outer mitten).
If you would rather not work the lining, cast on sts and then work a 4 - 8 rounds of rib before working braid and charts (you may want to use the Ladderback, also called, Invisible Jacquard) technique. There is an explanation with sample and image on page 6 to help you with this technique.
There are charts for Left and Right mittens. Size is determined by the needle size (a chart with a slightly larger thumb width is also included, if needed). Lighter Mitten charts are on pages 8 - 12, if these work better with your printer or viewing platform.
yarn:
Shetland 4ply by Gathered Sheep Yarns; Fingering; 100% Pure Shetland Wool; 234yds (213.97m) / 55g
approximate yarn amounts for a pair of mittens:
MC (Ghoulish Cocktail) - 28 (30, 32, 38) g; 120 (128, 137, 162) yds/ 109 (117, 125, 148) m
CC (Dreamy) - 24 (26, 28, 33) g; 103 (111, 109, 128) yds/ 94 (102, 125, 129) m
Lining (Refreshing) - 38 (40, 42, 48) g; 162 (170, 179, 205) yds/ 148 (156, 164, 187) m
waste yarn for provisional cast-on
small amounts for beak, eye pupil, and any other embellishments
needles:
2.0mm (us no 0) DPNs 6in/15cm; set of 5
2.25mm (us no 1) DPNs 6in/15cm; set of 5
2.5mm (us no 1.5) DPNs 6in/15cm; set of 5
2.75mm (us no 2) DPNs 6in/15cm; set of 5
3.0mm (us no 2.5) DPNs 6in/15cm; set of 5
2.0mm - 3.0mm crochet hook for provisional cast-on
gauge:
34 (32, 30, 28) sts x 34 (32, 30, 28) rows = 4in/10cm measured over stranded stockinette
approximate finished size:
Size is determined by needle size. If you work the lining the inner circumference will be decreased by approximately 0.25in/0.5cm and using a needle one size smaller.
7.5 (7.75, 8.5, 9) in / 19 (20, 21.5, 23) cm
additional tools:
needle to weave in ends, waste yarn/stitch holder
