Winter is really one of my favourite seasons. It’s obviously the snow, the frost, the icy wind, the magnificent landscapes that I will never tire of and that are like an invitation to take the time to slow down and appreciate the small, daily pleasures.
I took my inspiration here from nature in the heart of winter, and in particular from the little baubles of holly that are so often found in the decorations of the end of year celebrations and which bring with them hot chocolates, speculoos, very gourmet pancakes or waffles, and of course the cosy knitwear that we love so much.

The shawl’s lace body is circular, allowing the shawl to be very enveloping. The motifs are easy to remember and to knit, making the shawl accessible even to adventurous beginners. The garter stitch short rows use the German Short Row technique. The prototype is knitted using five contrasting colours but it is entirely possible to reduce the number of colours or knit it in one colour, the difference in texture between stocking stitch and garter stitch remain interesting regardless of the number of colours used.

Finished measurements:
Width X Height = 130 x 54 cm / 51 x 21¼“

• Basic lace stitches
• Bobbles (explained in the pattern)

Yarn:
• 380-400 m / 416-437 yds in the Main Colour (MC)
• 70-80 m / 76-87 yds in each of the five Contrasting Colours (CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, CC5).

Sample shawl is worked in Le Chat qui Tricote Selina (100% merino – 400 m / 437 yds & 100 g per skein), col. Chaï Tea (pale pink with speckles, MC), Caramel (yellow, CC1), Marrakech (orange, CC2), Terre de Sienne (brown, CC3), Bigarreau (red, CC4), Chamallow (baby pink, CC5).

Needles:
• 4 mm / US #6 - at least 80 cm / 32” circular needle to knit the shawl.
• 5 mm / US #8 - to knit the bind-off.

Gauge (10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4”; knitted flat):
• Stocking Stitch = 23 stitches x 32 rows.
• Garter stitch = 20 stitches x 38 rows.

Notions:
• 2 stitch markers
• 1 tapestry needle

L’hiver est vraiment l’une de mes saisons préférées. Pour moi, il est évidemment synonyme avec la neige, le givre, le vent glacé, les paysages magnifiques dont je ne me lasse pas et qui sont comme une invitation à prendre le temps de ralentir et d’apprécier les petits plaisirs du quotidien.

Je me suis inspirée ici de la nature au cœur de l’hiver, et notamment des petites boules de houx que l’on retrouve si souvent dans les décorations des fêtes de fin d’année et qui entraînent avec elles chocolats chauds, spéculoos, crêpes ou gaufres très gourmandes, et bien sûr les tricots douillets que nous aimons tant.

Le corps de dentelle du châle est semi-circulaire, ce qui permet au châle d’être très enveloppant. Les motifs sont faciles à retenir et à tricoter, ce qui rend le châle accessible même aux débutants aventureux. Les rangs raccourcis en point mousse utilisent la technique des rangs raccourcis à l’allemande.

Le prototype est tricoté en cinq couleurs contrastées, mais il est tout à fait possible de réduire le nombre de couleurs ou de le tricoter en une seule couleur. La différence de texture entre le jersey et le point mousse reste intéressante quel que soit le nombre de couleurs utilisées.

• 4 mm / US #6 - aiguilles circulaires d’au moins 80 cm / 32” de long pour tricoter le châle.
• 5 mm / US #8 - aiguilles circulaire pour rabattre les mailles.

Echantillon 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4”; tricoté à plat :
• Jersey = 23 mailles x 32 rangs.
• Mousse = 20 mailles x 38 rangs.
