I Heart Granny
I  Granny is a super sweet and super snuggly baby blanket. Its hearty texture is created using post stitches in a similar manner as crochet cables. The pattern is somewhat advanced, but if you’re familiar with hooking up cables you shouldn’t have a problem.
Detailed photo diagrams that show stitch placement (not step-by-step tutorials) are included to complement the written instructions.
Complete crochet charts are included and can be used on their own or as a helpful tool with the written pattern. Charts were tested independently of the written pattern.
Pattern is also available on Etsy. Click the “visit pattern website” link above to buy it there.
New! For the first time, I’ve included both a US and UK version of the pattern. Just look for your preferred terminology in the titles of the PDFs available for download. And, since this is the first time I’ve done this, please, alert me to any mistakes you find so I can learn to make my system more effective in the future.
Size Details
The pattern instructions are for a large baby blanket, about 41 inches wide by 43 inches long - great for wrapping, snuggling, and using into the toddler years. If you’d like to make a larger or smaller blanket it’s very easy! The pattern includes instructions for widening your piece by 7.5 inch increments and lengthening in 5 inch increments.
Estimate, and estimates only, for converting the pattern to Aran weight yarn can be found at the blog post here. These estimates have not been tested, but are there to help you plan as best as possible. It’s always safer to have extra yarn on hand when making adjustments like these.
Gauge Details
While gauge is helpful, a perfect match is not entirely critical for this project unless you are worried about yarn usage or the final size. If using either of the two recommended yarns you will not need to worry about having enough yarn, there will be plenty of wiggle room.
Hook Details
This project requires two hooks. A 4mm or size needed for gauge, and a 4.5mm or a size up from the hook used to obtain gauge.
Stitch markers are helpful but not necessary.
Yarn Details
The main sample was made with Stylecraft Bambino DK; 1 ball each of Sage, Little Boy Blue, Vintage Blue, Grey Mist, Soft Pink, and Heather; and 3 balls of White. (Hint: less than 20 grams of each color will be left over and about 80 grams of white.)
The rainbow sample was made with 4 cakes of Lion Brand Mandala in Sprite, but any colorway or other self-striping cake yarn should work as well. Just make sure you choose something with a very long color change, shorter color changes may distract from the textured pattern. (Hint: about half a cake of Mandala will be left over.)
