This stylish capelet will let you practice working the yoke decreases that are used on a sweater without knitting the sweater body or sleeves. Because this is essentially a sweater yoke, it is intended to be short: a capelet, rather than a cape. It works up very quickly if you use chunky yarn.

Options include collar types: crew, mock turtle, turlenect, open collar.

Pattern includes a visual plan, planning worksheet and step-by-step project sheet to be used to create your personalized capelet.

Yarn: Smooth yarn will show off color patterns best. Unspun lopi will give you the feeling that you’re knitting a real Icelandic garment, but just about any type will work for this design. For practice I suggest a chunky-weight yarn and US size 9 or 10 (5.5 or 6 mm) knitting needles.

Knitting needles: size appropriate for chosen yarn:
Circular needle 24 to 29 inches (60 to 74 cm) long;
Circular needle 12 to 16 inches (30 to 40 cm) long
For neckband or collar: Either 1 set of 4 or 5 dpn or circular needle 12 to 16 inches long in 2 sizes smaller than primary needles. (book includes tips for choosing lengths of circular needles if you would choose those over double points)

Child: approximately 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) long, 40 inch (102 cm) circumference at lower edge, 14 inches (36 cm) at neck.
Adult: approximately 12-14 inches (30.5-35.5 cm) long, 60 inch (152 cm) circumference at lower edge, 18 inches (46 cm) at neck.
